Icthya can't help but smile at Aalmon's feeble efforts to communicate
with the horses. When he is done, she mentions to him that they should
decide on a place to meet should they get separated. "It is doubtful
we will travel the whole way together: I will halt and deal with any
dangers that may threaten your mission. But we must not forget our
greater purpose, which means we must keep these animals live, and meet
up, even if it means you arrive late."

She whispers into the ears of both animals now, telling them a tale of
the Green Age and of the great steed Silkwing, who flew faster than
the wind and lived only for speed and then singing a magical spell
into their ears to give them force. Once she has removed the
cumbersome saddle, she plonks her little friend Tanuki atop the horse
and leaps up herself. The creature takes a swig of brandy from an
earthenware jug and hands it to his mistress, smacking his lips, then
bends close to the larger beast and entwines his claws in the
beautiful mane, pushing his legs back, these extending and wrapping
around Icthya's waist. Tanuki's fur vanishes suddently and his skin
grows soft, suckers coming out of his legs and arms and holding on to
the horse and his mistress.

Icthya laughs, pulling a waterskin out and dousing her friend with
water so he doesn't dry out,
