Aalmon chews a while on the last mouthful of unspilled food. He
appreciated local customs well enough to know that the thumbing of a
table was a serious matter here on the wild frontier, so he tried to
hold his irritation in check and not inflame the situation more than was
needed.
"What sort of courier would I be were I to blab the details of my
mission to everyone who asked? I did not undertake such an epic journey
through uncharted lands and ungodly horrors for idle fun or for a few
silver coins. My home city and many others are doomed if my task fails."
"It is not that I am unwilling to help, the question is whether you can
find a way in which this helps my existing commission more than the
diversion harms it. If you cannot then I would be a poor and useless
courier to be so easily diverted."
He leaned down and picked up a toppled chair for his irate visitor then
gestured to the serving girl that he would like a replacement for his
pie. Whichever path he took from here he would need his full strength
and a full stomach.
