Despite some initial losses, the skirmishers led by
Aalmon made their rapid retreat with thousands of
zombies and skeletons streaming after them in the dark
and the rain, with only the most minimal success. Upon
reaching the Deu River however, their further advance
was stopped by a wide, muddy plain created by Icthya's
dam [major defeat for the undead: mud resistance vs
their movement].
Most of the Icthya's Aldryami spearmen positioned
themselves on the northern bank, whereupon they set
upon the most ardent of the undead, both skeleton and
zombie, with significant success. Only a few of the
undead managed to clamber up that embankment in their
relentless pursuit of their quarry [major defeat for
the undead: spearmen vs undead, modified from above].
But they still had the benefit of sheer numbers; and
the Aldryami knew that eventually they would be
overwhelmed.
When the bulk of the undead forces had reached the
middle of the plain, messengers were dispatched back
to Icthya, Kalen and Baros, at the dam, proteced by a
ring of some the best defensive warriors. Whilst
Icthya attempted to convert the Water to Holy Water
[Heal Water magical ability], greater success was
achieved by allying with a powerful river spirit charm
[Hero Points already paid for]. Upon this moment,
Kalen used the special Mostal magic to explode the
damned dam. Appealing to the gods of the dwarves, an
exclaiming in joy (unusual for the normally dour
dwarves) at the engineering marvel, a mighty torrent
of water gushed forth, sweeping all before it.
And sweep forth it did; hundreds upon hundreds of the
undead were utterly unprepared the torrent, as were
their vampire and wizard controllers. As their
controller perished, the undead themselves became
aimless. Some of the zombies remained stuck in the mud
as the river remade itself over them. Skeletons, swept
off their feet, found themselves buffeted and bashed
against fallen trees and tumbling rocks. But more
powerful of all, was the ancient river spirit which
touched upon the remaining Power of these animated
corpses and told them to rest, to sleep, to return to
their natural state, to end their fight, to be - at
peace.
It is said that many of the Aldryami burst into
sponatenous song at this moment, both mournful for the
foliage which had nobly given their lives in this most
momentual success and with victory that at least ten
thoudand corpses were now truly at rest and their
bodily forms would provide nutrients for generations
of plant-life to come.
But all was not perfect; far to the east near the city
of Seguarane, the elite forces of Theoblanc remained.
Through some divination or good luck they had managed
to scamper to the north bank of the Deu and now faced
the city itself, along with two armies of militia and
an army of mercenaries. East of the Tanier there was
also two skeleton armies, one zombie army with their
leaders - and now aware of the location of the former
dam, and army of mercenaries were headed rapidly in
that direction.
Midnight approached. Despite the pouring rain and the
darkness of night, the red moon was high above. The
battle for Seguarane City had began.
