Aalmon had spent as much of the journey as he could holding onto the
ropes and looking out to the horizon, the sight of the distant grey line
seeming to drain some of the grey from his face. During a relatively
calm stretch whilst the sailors were busy near the back of the ship he
spoke with the others of his fears.
"I have to confess I am afraid of what is to come, perhaps not afraid of
what you might think but afraid all the same. The Nameless Man told us
to find the bearers of the three weapons and now at last I feel we are
getting close to finding the first of them but Talor's curse will stand
between us and him unless we find a way to sidestep it. Both the bearer
and the weapon are tied up with this curse, it is something we must face
up to. Perhaps that is even the true meaning of the prophesy and why we
are here at all, I don't know."
He spoke haltingly, as if struggling to translate strange concepts into
any tongue that the fellowship could understand.
"This curse is a thing ruled over by the Moon and the Moon's teachings
are that a curse is only a curse if you accept it as such. There are
many stories of great souls - saints if you like - who have had the
insight to see through a curse to the hidden blessing within. I have
been gifted a faint glimmer of that insight and it is surely fate that I
must try to journey through this curse and hope to come out the other
side of it. If I fail then I could be cursed in ways worse than the
Telmori, insight has its own perils - moral perils. Anyway it is
probably best that just one of us takes this upon themselves and I have
learned enough to believe it must be me. The bearers of the banner once
revealed the curse, now I think it is time for the bearers to try to
reveal something new. Something better."
